EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
