Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
