The Video Platform Grants Viewers Control to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service announced that it now features over 1 billion content made with AI.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This advancement coincides with a surge in content created by AI, fueled by recent video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a competing service exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this material is deemed mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or surreal.

Our research shows that a lot of users enjoy content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the option to increase or decrease of that, based on their own likes,” stated a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

TikTok shared that there are currently over a billion videos on its app tagged as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 million pieces of content are added to the app each day, making AI content a minor portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Members will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the content preference setting in the application and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be controlled under the filter include politics, style, cosmetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies require creators to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its community policies.

Furthermore, the service will henceforth apply an artificially created label to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for spotting content made by AI. This step is designed to deter users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also launching a $2m awareness program for specialists and institutions to develop educational content about ethical AI use. This program will support charitable organizations focused on educating computer science.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has justified its safety measures, during debate over plans to lay off numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to reduce 439 jobs in its trust and safety team in the UK capital, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by staff. TikTok reported a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
